Earlier this year OBRA was named the winner of the 7th annual Young Architects Program competition sponsored by PS1 Contemporary Art Center and the Museum of Modern Art. Projects currently under construction include an 8,000 sf summer residence in Southampton, New York. Other current works include a Radial Villa atop a hill overlooking Oyster Bay in Millneck, New York and the House of Multiple Horizons, a vineyard residence under the Pie de Palo Mountain in San Juan, Argentina which utilizes standard rural post-and-beam construction to create plastered curved walls of light in four round interior courtyards. The projects undertaken by OBRA Architects span a wide range of programs and sizes yet consistently seek to evoke invention and interest through explorations of material, structure, site, and experience. OBRA is the recipient of two 2004 Chicago Athenaeum American Architecture Awards, for its winning entry in the international design competition for Freedom Park in Pretoria, South Africa and its housing entry to a competition sponsored by the Ministry of Housing in Chile. In South Africa, the ten galleries of the museum dedicated to the struggle against apartheid are connected by coiling ramps forming a historical continuum within four giant intersecting structures modeled after the trunks of giant baobab trees. In Chile, Nine Square Sky Housing proposes a prototype for urban development that provides housing for 152 families in a city block. An exercise in architettura aperta, the project proposes a series of urban gardens, terraces and colonnades as a work in progress to be continued by the future residents themselves. Two projects, Architettura Povera: Wall of Lessons, an exhibit installation at the Rhode Island School of Design showcasing OBRA’s work, and the Seaview Manufacturing Facility have been distinguished by ACADIA, the Association for Computer-Aided Design in Architecture, for their contribution to the evolving relationship between design and construction brought about by digital technology. Last year, OBRA was included in a select group of Emerging Voices by the Architectural League of New York and lectured at the Urban Center in New York on the potential for a contemporary poetics of architecture. In 2003 Pablo Castro and Jennifer Lee were named deMontêquin Senior Fellows of the Society of Architectural Historians for their research on architect/engineer Eladio Dieste.
